The Polish economy has received another positive signal. The latest data from the Central Statistical Office shows that retail sales in June 2026 increased significantly more than analysts expected. This is important news, as household consumption remains one of the most important pillars of national GDP growth.

Retail sales grew more than expected

According to data from the Central Statistical Office, retail sales at constant prices were 6.2% higher in June 2026 than a year earlier. This represents a real increase in the number of goods purchased after eliminating the impact of price changes.

Economists expected growth of 5.2% year-on-year, so the published result was significantly better than forecast. This is the highest sales growth since September 2025.

For comparison, retail sales increased by 2.2% year-on-year in June of last year. Month-on-month, compared to May 2026, they rose by 1.4%.

Cheaper fuel supported consumer spending

One factor contributing to the improved results may have been lower fuel prices for drivers, resulting from tax changes. This is confirmed by detailed statistics from the Central Statistical Office.

Sales at gas stations, calculated at constant prices, increased by 9% compared to the same period last year.

The biggest increases in furniture, electronics and automotive

June data indicate a clear revival of purchasing in several important market segments.

The strongest increases were recorded in:

  • furniture stores and stores selling electronics and household appliances – by 14.8 percent year on year,
  • pharmacies and drugstores – by 10.2%,
  • car showrooms – by 9.6 percent

These results may indicate improving consumer sentiment and a greater willingness of households to purchase durable goods.

First half results remain solid

After aggregating data for the first six months of 2026, retail sales increased by 3.5% year-on-year. This result is only slightly lower than the 3.7% increase recorded in the same period in 2025.

Data after taking into account seasonality

The Central Statistical Office points out that after eliminating the impact of seasonal factors, retail sales in June were 4.7% higher than a year earlier and increased by 1.7% compared to May 2026.

Economists: Improved sentiment drives purchases

According to Rafał Benecki, Chief Economist at ING Bank Śląski, the increase in sales of durable and semi-durable goods is the result of improved consumer sentiment and the drop in fuel prices observed in June.

The expert emphasizes that after two months of decline, food sales also increased, increasing by 1.7% year-on-year. He believes that recent price cuts in food products may have contributed to this decline.

Sales at current prices also increased significantly

In addition to inflation-adjusted data, the Central Statistical Office also published results in current prices, i.e. without taking into account changes in price levels.

In this context, the value of retail sales increased by 6.8% year-on-year in June.

The largest increase in spending was recorded at gas stations, where consumers spent 15.9% more than a year ago. Sales at stores offering furniture, electronics, and household appliances increased by 14.1%.

Grocery stores still account for the largest share of sales

The largest share in the retail sales structure – excluding supermarket chains, whose data has not been published in national reports by the Central Statistical Office for several years – is still held by specialized grocery stores, such as butcher shops, greengrocers and bakeries.

This segment accounts for 25.3% of all retail sales. At the same time, sales growth in this category was moderate, at 2.5% year-on-year.

In summary, June data indicate continued strong consumption in Poland. Better-than-expected retail sales figures may signal that domestic demand remains one of the main drivers of economic growth.
